Our Second Grade Mall Week

28

Posted by Room 12 | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 17-06-2011

Today was the best day ever! Today we had the second grade mall. We sold our goods and services to the 1st graders. Most of us ran out of our goods, which was a good thing because that means we had good prizes or it was a bad thing because we didn’t have enough to sell. Some of us had long lines because the 1st graders really wanted to buy what we were selling. Here are some of the goods and services we sold:

  • Tommy and Braeden sold paper creations.
  • Cole, Owen, and Kage set up carnival games for the first graders to play.
  • Jasmin, Grace, and Ava S. sold hair clips and painted nails.
  • Kylie, Katie, Nikki, and Ruby sold sock pets and teddy bears.
  • Matthew, Daniel, and Arthur set up a Lego museum, had a raffle, and a play area.

We thought it was really exciting when the first graders showed up. The second graders got to shop after recess and we made even MORE money! What a crazy, exciting, awesome, busy, fun, cool day!

Our Week

16

Posted by Room 12 | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 10-06-2011

Our “normal” week was fun. We are getting very close to the end of the school year and we are all very excited! Next week is going to be CRAZY! We are looking forward to the Second Grade Mall, Father’s Day, Irish Dancing, and I am a Scientist Day.

This week we learned more about Scotland. We learned that some Scottish people speak in a dialect. A dialect is a variety of the English language. We listened to Mr. Henderson reading a Scots counting book called A Moose in the Hoose. In America, it would be called A Mouse in the House. Here are a few words we learned:

  • Wyatt learned that a bubblyjock is a turkey.
  • Natalie learned that a dug is a dog.
  • Melanie learned that a selky is a seal.
  • Jack learned that a moose is a mouse.
  • Kyle learned that a puggie is a monkey.
  • Kage learned that a coo is a cow.
  • Carter learned that a cat is a cat.

We learned many different words in Scots. If you know a few words, please comment. Today our lesson was about kilts and tartans. We all made our own kilts with a special tartan pattern. Here are a few tartan names:

  • Parker named her tartan the Armstrong one.
  • Matthew named his tartan the Worley.
  • Riley named her tartan McIntire.

We have been practicing very hard this week on our Irish dancing performance. We got to learn the dances, we acted out the story, and we practiced saying our lines. We’re looking forward to doing the performance for our parents.

Today we watched the Wizard of Oz! We’ve been reading the book so we compared the story to the movie. There were a few strange parts in the movie but we LOVED it. It’s a pretty old movie and we could tell. If you have seen the movie or read the book, please comment.

     Have a great weekend!!!

Our Scottish Week

This is going to be short. We are running out of time people!!! >:-( This week we began learning about Scotland. Scotland is in Europe. In Europe is the United Kingdom, which is a nation. The United Kingdom is made up of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In Great Britain there are three countries Wales, Scotland, and England.

Here are a few facts we learned:

  • Ava learned that Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain but is a part of the United Kingdom.
  • Kage learned that when they are in the traditional attire, they wear small knives in their sock.
  • Daniel learned that Great Britain is made up of England, Scotland, and Wales.
  • Cameron learned that her name is has it’s own tartan pattern.
  • Zane learned that the kilts are NOT skirts!

One more fantastic thing this week was our new student. His name is Wyatt and he fits in like a glove. We learned that Wyatt has a special voice. He is a great addition!

Please comment!!! Have a great weekend!

Our Open House Week

Posted by Room 12 | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 27-05-2011

Let us introduce you to our fabulous week. This week we had Open House. Some of us don’t know why we call Open House, Open House. We think it should be named Open Classroom or Fun Day or Open School. If you can come up with a creative name for Open House, please comment. There were so many surprises during Open House. We got to show our parents many things like:

  • our meal worms
  • our fairy tale project
  • our growing plants
  • our rain forest
  • our rain forest animals
  • our Playbills
  • our fairy tale
  • our portfolios with all of our work
  • our symmetry project
  • our animal report
  • our Vocabulary Draw
  • and more!

If there was something that you liked most at Open House, please comment.

Besides Open House, we got to read our fairy tales to the first graders. Some of us think that reading so long makes our mouth tired and dry. The first graders were really nice and really enjoyed both the stories and the project.

We also got to do Irish Dancing with Ms. Maura. Most of us are doing a little better than we were last time. It’s still a little tiring but we are getting used to it. We learned a new step this week called the side-step. We’re starting to feel like we are Irish. (McTavish would be so proud.) Not only do we get to dance but we also have been practicing mime and gesture.

We hope you enjoyed Open House! Have a great long weekend and enjoy the time off. We know Mrs. Henderson will!

Our Fairy Tale Week

15

Posted by Room 12 | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 20-05-2011

We had a grawesome (great and awesome) week. On Monday, we began working on our final copy of our fairy tale. We have been working very hard in order to finish them for Open House. We worked on them every day. We got to choose fabric and some of them were very interesting. The fabrics were many different textures. Some of them were soft and silky. Some of them were hard. Some of them were even furry. Some of us are close to finishing. We are very excited to see the finished product.

On Tuesday and Thursday, we started Irish Dancing. Boy was it tiring! Here are a few comments about the dancing:

  • Sophia said, “It was a lot of moves.”
  • Lucy said, “I used to dance with my dad, but this is way more fun.”
  • Daniel said, “It was very tiring to do all the stretches.”
  • Cameron said, “It made me feel good and stretched.”
  • Carter said, “I think it is hard.”

We cannot wait until Open House next week. Who’s coming? Please comment.

Our Math Testing Week

23

Posted by Room 12 | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 16-05-2011

Last week we had math state testing. We’ll be happy to share our experience with you. Math state testing was a little hard. Most of us thought it was harder than language arts. The hardest part was that we had to listen carefully to Mrs. Henderson because we didn’t have the questions in front of us. And Mrs. Henderson was only allowed to say the question two times. We still got to chew gum and Mentos, so it wasn’t all bad. And we did drink some “brain juice”. All in all, it was a great experience.

Here are some of the questions we thought were hard:

  • Comparing fractions
  • Finding the mode >:-(
  • Finding the range

Last week we also worked on filling our classroom rain forest for Open House! (Open House is Thursday May 26th. We hope to see you there!) We are learning all about the rain forest. This week we will pick our “secret” rain forest animal. DO NOT ask us what our animal is!

We also began writing our rough draft for our fairy tales. Here are some of our titles:

  • Mr. Smie and the Pie
  • A Journey to a Better Life
  • The Bright Fairy and the Evil Witch
  • The Journey
  • The Hedgehog Knight

I’m sure you are looking forward to reading these terrific works of art.

Reminder: Bring in fabric and cardboard THIS WEEK!!!

Have a great week! See you Friday!!

Our LA State Testing Week

Posted by Room 12 | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 06-05-2011

Wow! What an amazing week! It was different than any other week we had so far. This week we started state testing. It was a great experience! We have never had that much testing in one week. We are happy that we’re done with the language arts portion. In order to concentrate, Mrs. Henderson gave us treats. We had our choice between peppermint gum and Mentos. On Wednesday, we even got brain juice aka orange juice! Here are a few comments about testing:

  • Kyle and Matthew liked that we got Mentos and gum.
  • Braeden and Kate liked having the brain juice.
  • Daniel liked filling in the answers.
  • Cameron liked reading the stories.
  • Kage liked drawing when he completed the test.

We are now masters at testing and we’re ready for next week! ;-D

This week we also started putting together our rain forest! So far we’ve learned:

  • The bromeliad has water and animals that live inside it.
  • Plants need insects to live.
  • Most rain forests are located around the equator.
  • Insects need to pollinate the rain forest.
  • The rain forest has four layers.

If you know any interesting facts about the rain forest, please put them in the comment section.

We hope you come to our open house in 3 weeks. We are preparing for your arrival. It was a grateful, amazing, and wonderful week. Have a great weekend!!! AND A VERY HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!

Note from Mrs. Henderson: Thank you so very much for making teacher appreciation week so amazing! I can’t remember a time when I felt so appreciated. I really appreciate it! ;-D THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!

Our Field Trip Week

8

Posted by Room 12 | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 29-04-2011

Hello. We had a fantastic week but we are only going to write about the field trip today because we are running out of time. Today we were sooooo lucky. We got to see the movie African Cats. It’s about two different families of wild cats. One was a lion family. One was a cheetah family. It was an awesome movie, although it was sad in parts. :-( Here are some facts we learned from the movie:

  • Lucy learned that mother cheetahs carry their cubs by the neck.
  • Ava learned that there is a big river that separated the two families.
  • Sophia learned that cheetahs are one of the fastest land animals.
  • Kate learned that some cheetahs fight other cheetahs.
  • Zane learned that cheetah cubs are blind when they are born.
  • Cole learned that mothers have a call to signal their babies.
  • Kylie learned that lions travel when it rains.

What a great day!
